Summer Travel Ideas

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of Summer, so now is a great time to start planning your travel. Whether you want to go to the beach, see the family or have a wedding to travel to or want to see historical sites, Memolink has you covered this summer. Here are a few top summer travel destinations to get the wheels turning on where you can go this year.

nycNew York City

No matter what you want to do, you can do it in NYC. Times Square has thousands of tourist attractions, but I prefer to get off the beaten path a bit. Few parks are as nice or offer as many options as Central Park, and after you finish wandering around, head to Carnegie Deli and have a traditional New York sandwich. Broadway (even if you don’t see a show) and the Met are must see attractions as well and when all the touring has you tuckered out, head over to New York’s oldest brewery, McSorley’s, or take the train to Long Island and hang out on the beach.

Fly into Honolulu then quickly get out of there and relax on the North Shore (stay at Turtle Bay or a vacation rental). The North Shore is home to some of the most famous surfing in the world, but during the summer the waves are much smaller and less intimidating to learn to surf or just wade in. Another once in a lifetime opportunity is the helicopter ride from Turtle Bay to Honolulu and back. The views can’t be beat and you will see sites that can only be seen by air. Also be sure to take a sunset boat ride, eat pokey and shrimp tacos and remember to slow down and relax…nothing moves fast in Hawaii.

Washington DC

History buff or not, DC has something for everyone. Some of the obvious sites to see are the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorial’s the Washington Monument (it’s open again!) , the Smithsonian and the National Mall, but there is so much more out there. Head into some of the historic DC neighborhoods like Adams Morgan and Georgetown for an afternoon, or take the relatively short drive to Annapolis, MD and see the Naval Academy and downtown Annapolis, which includes the best crab cakes you can find anywhere.  If you want to keep driving, head north to Baltimore and check out the Inner Harbor, the Aquarium (consistently voted as one of the top on the country) and maybe check out an Orioles game.

Some people like to hit as many countries as possible and some like to spend a few weeks in one spot and soak up all of the culture of an area. Whatever it is, Europe has something for everyone. One thing to consider is the weather; Italy for instance is unbearably hot in the summer, so maybe you want to stay more northern and go to the UK, Germany or Holland this summer.
